IEEE ICCC jubilee conference kicks off

IEEE ICCC jubilee conference kicks off

Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, will host the 10th ICCC (International Conference on Computational Cybernetics and Cyber-Medical Systems) conference of the IEEE international engineering organization. This is not only attended by, but also co-organized by Óbuda University, in collaboration with the University of Iceland, the IEEE Hungary Section and the Hungarian Fuzzy Society. In addition to cybernetics and cybermedicine, the conference will also cover the social and economic aspects of these disciplines.

The first day of the conference will start with plenary lectures by world-renowned researchers. The lectures of Prof. József Bokor (ELKH SZTAKI, Hungary), Prof. Mo Jamshidi (The University of Texas at San Antonio, USA) and Prof. Oussama Khatib (Stanford University, USA) will provide insights into exciting new developments in control theory, cyber-physical systems and robotics.

Óbuda University will be represented by a large professional delegation at the conference, which will take place from 6th to 9th of July. Our colleagues will be giving a number of interesting presentations, which will be reported on later.

The IEEE Hungary Section is led by Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács, Rector of Óbuda University. The aim of the association is to bring together the Hungarian technical and interdisciplinary scientific community and to foster active international collaborations.

Óbuda University start-up teams among the best!

Twenty of the most promising projects of the second year of the Hungarian Startup University Program (HSUP) are presented to investors. It was not an easy task for the panel of experts to select the most innovative and marketable initiatives from nearly 200 better-than-best projects.

Three start-up teams from the Óbuda University – FilaMass, MotivApp and Agilis Press – were also on hand to cheer on the “Demo Day” on 13th July. After the 3-minute pitches, the jury will award the projects with professional recommendations. Among the important criteria for the evaluation will be the novelty of the project, its market potential, how effectively it responds to a given problem, team cohesion and maturity for implementation. The FilaMass team, which is further developing 3D printing technologies, has also been given a vote of confidence by the University of Óbuda, which recently signed a cooperation and technology transfer agreement with the students. The university has thus reached a national level of excellence in supporting the implementation of student innovations.

EKIK Image-guided intervention robotics: present and future

The Director General of the University Research and Innovation Center (EKIK) at the Óbuda University, Dr. Tamás Haidegger, has published a paper in the prestigious IEEE Xplore magazine on image-guided interventional robotics. The aim of the article is to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the art, to support future system developers, and to facilitate the transfer from scientific research to applied clinical technology development.

EKIK: Samsung visit

The Óbuda University and Samsung SDI Hungary Zrt. agreed to collaborate on a practical training programme. On 18th February 2022, Hyun Jung, Vice President and Hongbum Shin, Director of Economics, signed a cooperation agreement with the management of the University. The delegation also visited the Antal Bejczy iRobot Technology Laboratory at the University Research and Innovation Centre, where Dr. Péter Galambos presented the latest developments and current projects ongoing in the laboratory.

A very successful Open Day

An open day was held at the János Neumann Faculty of Informatics on 4th February as part of the admission campaign. The event was very successful and was attended by students from vocational colleges in Budapest as well as from institutions outside the capital. The programme also included a visit to the Antal Bejczy iRobotics Laboratory at the University Research and Innovation Centre, where Dr Péter Galambos, head of the laboratory, Dr Enikő Nagy, Renáta Nagyné Eelek and Tamás Nagy gave a spectacular robot demonstration.

BOSCH ECB Academy 2022

Dr. Tamás Haidegger, Director General of the University Research and Innovation Centre (EKIK), was invited to the BOSCH ECB Academy 2022, a series of events aimed at increasing professional knowledge, creating networking opportunities and showcasing the work of other disciplines.

In his presentation, the Head of EKIK stressed that extreme globalisation, the war in the Western world and COVID-19 together represent an unprecedented challenge for humanity. In the 21st century, engineers are constantly faced with new challenges and have to find new solutions. In particular, intelligent systems and robotics can help re-organise supply chains, the transition to Industry 4.0 and social inclusion. Possible technology-driven solutions include the emergence of service robots, indoor and outdoor monitoring and disinfection robots, compliance monitoring robots and delivery self-service platform functions.

“We are also seeing significant advances in the automation of micro- and nano-robotics, as well as in laboratory-based Artificial Intelligence developments, which could also play a prominent role in disaster response.” – said Dr Tamás Haidegger.

The presentation covered the ethical implications of robotics and automation in both emergency and post-emergency worlds, with a special focus on the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals 2015. We can rightly expect autonomous systems of the future to not only be environmentally aware and ethical, but also sustainable.
